Effective April 1, 2021, an employer in Saskatchewan must provide and keep readily accessible the type, size, and number of first aid kits meeting the requirements set out in “CSA Z1220-17, First aid kits for the workplace”. Please refer to the WorkSafeSask website for full details.
The type and size of first aid kit required for a workplace in Saskatchewan is determined by the number of workers per shift, the workplace hazard rating as well as the likelihood of harm. See summary below:
- 1 worker or a worker in isolation requires a CSA Type 1 Personal First Aid Kit.
For Low Risk Workplace Environments:
- 2-25 workers per shift requires a CSA Type 2 Basic First Aid Kit – Small (2-25 Workers).
- 26-50 workers per shift requires a CSA Type 2 Basic First Aid Kit – Medium (26-50 Workers).
- 51-100 workers per shift requires a CSA Type 2 Basic First Aid Kit – Large (51-100 Workers).
For High Risk Workplace Environments:
- 2-25 workers per shift requires a CSA Type 3 Intermediate First Aid Kit – Small (2-25 Workers).

- 51-100 workers per shift requires a CSA Type 3 Intermediate First Aid Kit – Large (51-100 Workers).
First Aid Kit Risk Assessment
The employer, contractor or owner is required to have a competent person conduct a first aid kit risk assessment to determine the appropriate classification for the workplace. The classification will identify the minimum requirements for first aid supplies and equipment.

a) requirements for first aid rooms or first aid stations
b) requirements for workplace first aid incident reporting and recording, which can be subject to federal, provincial, or territorial legislation or organizational policies.
c) specialized first aid supplies and equipment for particular workplaces (e.g., marine, mining, forestry, transportation, pools, and school buses) where specific legislation could apply; and
d) particular environments where the authority having jurisdiction has specific legislation and requirements for workplace first aid supplies/equipment (ie. school buses, pools, marine, mining, forestry and transportation).
