Effective March 17, 2021, an employer in Quebec must provide and keep readily accessible the type, size, and number of first aid kits meeting the requirements set out in “CSA Z1220-17, First aid kits for the workplace”. Please refer to the CNESST website for full details.

The type and size of first aid kit required for a workplace in Quebec is determined by the number of workers per shift, the workplace hazard rating as well as the likelihood of harm. See summary below:

For Low Risk Workplace Environments:

For High Risk Workplace Environments:

*If there are more than 100 workers per shift, the employer must increase the number of kits and distribute them proportionately in the workplace.

The employer is responsible for assessing the risk level in their workplace. Most workplaces are low or moderate risk and require the basic kit. The training that is part of the First aid in the workplace Program refers to the basic kit. The intermediate kit should be used in high-risk workplaces.

Assessing the risk level is an assessment of the types of injuries or illnesses that may occur in the workplace, the probability that they will occur and their potential severity. It allows the employer to determine whether they have all the equipment they need to deal with the various injuries that can occur in their workplace.

Identifying risks in the workplace is part of the prevention process.

*Note: The CSA Standards for first aid kits do not include:
a) requirements for first aid rooms or first aid stations
b) requirements for workplace first aid incident reporting and recording, which can be subject to federal, provincial, or territorial legislation or organizational policies.
c) specialized first aid supplies and equipment for particular workplaces (e.g., marine, mining, forestry, transportation, pools, and school buses) where specific legislation could apply; and
d) particular environments where the authority having jurisdiction has specific legislation and requirements for workplace first aid supplies/equipment (ie. school buses, pools, marine, mining, forestry and transportation).
